Hyderabad: Every few months or so, the internet churns up a new fad that promises to help you lose those niggling kilos in a few weeks. While weight loss takes time, effort and loads of patience, there is one trend being circulated online which might help hasten the process. Chia seeds (sabja as they are locally known) that you often find sprinkled over faludas, smoothies and yoghurts are great for giving one a full feeling.
According to the trend online, bloggers are claiming that a tablespoon of chia seeds soaked in a glass of water half-an-hour before a meal can do wonders for those wanting to lose weight. The seeds develop a jelly-like texture around them and curb the appetite. It makes one eat less of the meal, thus cutting down on calories consumed. It also helps in bowel movement. What they claim is partly true.
According to chief dietician, Dr Prashanti at Basavatarakam Indo-Cancer Hospital, chia seeds are soluble fibres that are high in protein content and beneficial for the body. But, just drinking chia seed water isn’t going to do the trick. “It has to be accompanied by proper exercise and other dietary measures. Only then, it will make a difference,” explains Dr Prashanti.
She advises a teaspoon of chia seeds in a glass of water before every meal. If the bitter taste of the seeds isn’t palatable, she suggests having it as a post-workout snack drizzled over yoghurt which will provide a good boost of protein to the body.
Chia seeds, when consumed in moderation, are healthy for the body and won’t do any harm. A packet of chia seeds costs anywhere between Rs 30 and Rs 120 for 100 gm.
