Hyderabad: Former Minister and senior BRS leader T Harish Rao demanded that the State government initiate immediate measures to ensure implementation of 85 per cent reservation for Telangana students in B-category (management quota) seats in PG medical admissions. He accused the government of gross negligence and risking the future of Telangana students by failing to provide local reservation in PG medical admissions.
He also demanded for cancellation of the existing PG admission notification and the issuance of a fresh GO safeguarding Telangana students’ interests.
In an open letter to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Harish Rao said that hundreds of Telangana students were losing PG medical seats to students from other States due to the absence of a local quota in management seats. Of the 1,801 PG medical seats in Telangana, about 450 fall under the management quota, which currently has no local reservation, allowing students from other States to claim them.
He pointed out that Andhra Pradesh provides 85 per cent local reservation in such seats, while the Congress government in Telangana failed to offer the same. “If Telangana adopted a similar policy, at least 382 additional PG seats would go to local students,” he said.
The BRS leader reminded that under former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, the State had launched medical colleges in every district and reserved 85 per cent of B-category seats for locals, which resulted in 1,820 extra MBBS seats every year, equivalent to opening 20 new colleges.
“It’s a shame that Telangana’s own students are being denied opportunities in their native State, which even Andhra Pradesh guarantees,” he said, urging the Chief Minister to act before irreparable damage was done to students.
