Haryana Polls: Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat wins Julana seat

According to the Election Commission Phogat defeated her BJP rival Yogesh Kumar by a margin of 6,015 votes

Chandigarh: Olympic wrestler and Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat on Tuesday won her maiden election, defeating her nearest BJP rival Yogesh Kumar from Julana assembly seat in Haryana.

According to the Election Commission Phogat defeated Kumar by a margin of 6,015 votes.


Vinesh Phogat had, recently, resigned from Railways and joined Congress to contest in the Haryana elections. The wrestler who faced a setback in Paris Olympics 2024 bid adieu to both wrestling and the Railways job to join the Congress party and begin her feat in politics.

Counting of votes polled in the October 5 Haryana elections began at 8 am on Tuesday.

The ruling BJP has maintained the lead by sealing 49 seats and crossing the majority mark of 45 seats. Congress had won 35 seats, as per the latest available information on the Election Commission website.
