Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) seems to court controversy at every given opportunity. As the Rajesh Yadav-led junior selection committee picked 22 players for the upcoming under-19 Vinoo Mankad cricket tournament, there seems to be widespread resentment over the biased selection and the omission of some merited cricketers.
Secretary R Vijayanand said the selectors selected the team. “It is the selectors who picked the team. I sat at the meeting as a convener along with the CEO,’’ said Vijayanand.
Asked on the non-selection of merited players, Vijayanand said that they will discuss the issue in the Apex Council meeting. “We asked the selectors to see the performances of the players in the four-day tournament,’’ he said.
As a former cricketer said this is nothing new in HCA. “If today Hyderabad is performing badly it is because of poor selection. This is an age-old disease and this would not change too,’’ he said.
The list of the players selected is doing the rounds on social media. In the team there are five leg spinners and the performances of some of the players have not been outstanding nor do they have any decent performance to merit a place in the Hyderabad team. “This is how selections go in Hyderabad junior teams. It will not improve now nor in the future,’’ said a club secretary.
