Hyderabad: The Apex Council has described President Mohammed Azharuddin’s announcement of the season-opener 20-overs tournament for all the 215 clubs as out of the blue and will not be accepted according to the rules of the Hyderabad Cricket Association.

Even as Azharuddin had reiterated that Apex Council’s decisions as illegal, the statement by secretary R Vijayanand could spark another controversy. “The president has no powers to start any new cricket tournament. The matter was never discussed in the Apex Council meetings or with the Apex Council members, both officially and informally.

“No new tournament was discussed in the March 28 and April 11 Annual General Meetings. We the Apex members hereby reiterate that Md. Azharuddin is under suspension and no acts of the suspended President should be taken into cognisance and all the Clubs affiliated to HCA and players of HCA should understand that there will be no 20 overs cricket now,’’ he said.

Vijayanand, in fact, said that the new cricket season will start with all Covid-19 precautions and vaccines in a fortnight and the details of the tournament will be followed soon.

This latest confrontation between the Azharuddin and Apex Council could put the players and clubs in a dilemma. “We are in a piquant situation. We don’t know which group is in power. We will be punished if we play in either of the tournaments,’’ said a player.
