Hyderabad: Eating a healthy and sustainable diet which is good for health will also have an impact on the environment and also aid in reduction of greenhouse gases, improves water resources and aids in strengthening biodiversity, according to Dr Rattan Lal, the 2020 World Food Prize Laureate, which is considered the Nobel Prize in Agriculture.

“When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need,’’ he said speaking on the ‘Indian Cropping System’ as part of the BIO AGRI-2021, a bio-agri industry event that began in Hyderabad on Thursday evening.

Participating virtually in the event, he said healthy soil equaled healthy diet, which in turn equaled healthy people and healthy ecosystems.Over his career spanning more than five decades, Dr Lal promoted innovative soil-saving techniques benefiting the livelihoods of small farmers, improving food and nutritional security and saving several thousand hectares of natural tropical ecosystems.

Dr Praveen Rao, Vice Chancellor of Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, said ecosystem services like food, water purification, carbon sequestration, soil stabilisation, recreation, are benefits to people from nature. An MoU would be signed in future between the university and the BIPA for mutual cooperation and collocation, he said.

Dr KRK Reddy, president of  the Bio Agri Input Producers Association(BIPA), which is organising the event, said the industry body was working towards the use of biological technology that includes bio-pesticides, bio-stimulants, bio-fertilisers, and environmental management for sustainable agriculture in India. The event will focus on innovations, services, and delivery systems, biodiversity restoration, and sustainable agriculture. Over 150 delegates from all over India and abroad are participating in the event.
