Heavy rain cools Delhi-NCR as IMD predicts more showers
Heavy rain brought relief from heat and humidity across Delhi-NCR on Monday, while the IMD forecast more light to very light showers through August 15. The wet spell has lowered temperatures but also triggered traffic congestion and waterlogging across several areas
New Delhi: Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR on Monday, bringing much-needed relief from the prevailing heat and humidity, as the showers, which have continued intermittently over the past few days, have lowered daytime temperatures and provided pleasant weather conditions across the region.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi is likely to receive another spell of very light rainfall on August 12 and 13. One or two spells of rain are expected during this period, although overall precipitation is likely to remain limited.
The wind pattern is also expected to change over the coming days. On August 12, winds are likely to blow from the northeast to southwest direction, while on August 13, they are expected to shift from the northwest to west. Wind speeds are likely to range between 10 and 15 kmph.
The IMD has further predicted light to very light rainfall across several parts of Delhi on August 14 and 15. Wind speeds are expected to remain around 10-15 kmph, with westerly winds prevailing on August 14 and northwesterly winds likely on August 15.
Overall, the national capital is expected to witness cloudy skies and occasional light rainfall throughout the week. However, meteorologists have cautioned that the showers may not provide significant relief from humidity, as temperatures are likely to remain relatively high. According to the IMD, maximum temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged over the next seven days.
Delhi-NCR has witnessed widespread rainfall since Friday, with several areas receiving heavy showers over the weekend. Despite being only the first half of August, the region has already experienced a prolonged spell of rain. While the rainfall has helped reduce daytime temperatures, it has also caused severe traffic congestion and waterlogging in several localities.
According to IMD data, Saturday, August 8, was the rainiest day of the month in the last two years. As of Sunday morning, 98.7 mm of rainfall had been recorded during the preceding 24 hours, making it the highest single-day rainfall recorded in August since 2024.
The minimum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 26.5 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature was expected to remain around 34 degrees Celsius. Cloud cover persisted throughout the day, with light to moderate rainfall reported at isolated locations.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the moderate category on Monday. According to Air Quality Index (AQI) monitoring data, Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 157, Chandni Chowk 88, Pusa 63, JNU 59, North Campus 287, ITO 86, IIT Delhi 93, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium 75, Patparganj 65, and Narela 79. Despite the recent rainfall, several parts of the city continued to report moderate air quality levels.
