Heavy rain disrupts normal life in erstwhile Adilabad district

Moderate to heavy rain lashed the erstwhile Adilabad district from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, disrupting normal life. Nirmal and Mancherial were the worst affected, with swollen streams, damaged roads, traffic disruptions, injuries and a ₹1.35 crore production loss for SCCL.

Adilabad: Erstwhile Adilabad district saw moderate to heavy rains from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, disrupting normal life. Particularly, Nirmal and Mancherial districts were affected by downpours.

As per weather report on the website of Telangana Development Planning Society, Nirmal district was gauged to be 82.9 mm. Nirmal mandal registered the highest rainfall by 132 mm, followed by Kadam mandal which had 130 mm of rainfall. Nirmal Rural, Soan Rural and Khanapur mandals witnessed over 110 mm of rainfall.


The actual rainfall of the district was 396 mm as against the normal rainfall of 459.3 mm from June 1 to July 29, reflecting a deficit by 14 percent. Similarly, Mancherial district recorded an average rainfall of 80 mm. Kasipet mandal saw the highest rainfall by 123 mm. Chennur, Hajipur, Mandamarri, Mancherial and Chennur mandals experienced over 100 mm of rainfall.

The actual rainfall of the district was 414 mm when compared to the normal rainfall of 458.9 mm in this monsoon so far, indicating a deficit by 10 percent. Adilabad district’s average rainfall was measured to be 52.2 mm, while Kumram Bheem Asifabad district had 40.1 mm of rainfall. A major portion of mandals from the two districts received heavy rains.

Due to the heavy rains, hilly streams were swollen. As a result, low-level bridges were breached in several parts of Nirmal and Mancherial districts, affecting traffic. A woman sustained serious injuries, while three others of a family had minor injuries after they were trapped under a tin-roof, which collapsed at Alugama village in Kotapalli mandal following downpours.

Meanwhile, coal production and lifting of overburden were affected with rainwater entering Opencast mining projects of SCCL’s Srirampur and Mandamarri Areas. Machinery used for excavation of the coal was submerged. The SCCL suffered a loss of coal production worth Rs 1.35 crore due to the heavy rains.
