Mancherial/Peddapalli: Coal production at opencast mining projects of the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) was affected by incessant rains that continued to lash Mancherial and Peddapalli districts for the second consecutive day on Sunday.

Coal extraction was halted at three SCCL opencast projects (OCPs) in Mancherial district, which recorded an average rainfall of 45.7 mm. Operations were also affected at four OCPs in Peddapalli district, which recorded 38.5 mm of rainfall.

Officials said the rains disrupted the excavation of nearly 60,000 tonnes of coal per day across the projects, causing losses to the SCCL.

Heavy machinery, including dumpers and excavators used for coal extraction, was stranded at the projects due to the accumulation of rainwater, officials said. Efforts were under way to resume mining operations by draining the water from the projects.

The situation would be reviewed once the rains subside, officials said.

According to a weather report on the Telangana Development Planning Society website, Kannapelli mandal in Mancherial district recorded the highest rainfall of 120 mm. Ramagiri mandal in Peddapalli district recorded the highest rainfall in the district at 76.3 mm.

Meanwhile, several parts of Kumram Bheem Asifabad district received light to moderate rain, affecting coal mining operations in the Goleti Area. The district recorded an average rainfall of 39.2 mm, while Kagaznagar mandal received the highest rainfall of 83.3 mm.
