Heavy rains continue to throw life out of gear in erstwhile Adilabad

The Godavari River crossed the first flood warning level at Bhadrachalam after heavy upstream rainfall pushed inflows beyond 10 lakh cusecs. Authorities have sounded an alert, opened control rooms and asked residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant as water levels continue rising.

Adilabad: Erstwhile Adilabad district continued to see moderate to heavy rains for the third day on Friday, disrupting normal life.

Hilly streams were swollen, flooding causeways and damaging roads. Consequently, connectivity of rural parts was affected in Adilabad, Kumram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial and Nirmal districts. Huts and tin-roofed houses collapsed, rendering the poor homeless. A calf, cow and sheep were killed when a cowshed caved in at Kolamguda village in Gadiguda mandal.


The downpours forced officials to declare a holiday to educational institutions for the second day. Irrigation projects received copious inflows due to rains in upstream areas. Kaddam Narayana Reddy project in Kadem mandal centre had inflows by 19,527 cusecs. Mining of coal and removal of overburden was suspended in opencast mining projects in Mandamarri, Srirampur and Goleti, causing huge losses to SCCL.

As per weather report on the website of Telangana Development Planning Society, the average rainfall of Mancherial district was gauged to be 79.7 mm. Jannaram mandal received the highest rainfall by 119.4 mm, followed by Mancherial which had 112 mm of rainfall. Dandepalli, Luxettipet, Kasipet, Nennal, Bellampalli, Mancherial, Mandamarri, Naspur mandals experienced anywhere between 70 mm and 108 mm of rainfall.

The actual rainfall of Mancherial district was 596 mm as against the normal rainfall of 473.2 mm from June 1 to July 31, reflecting an increase by 26 percent. Similarly, Adilabad district recorded an average rainfall of 76.2 mm. Thalamadugu mandal had the highest rainfall of 137 mm, followed by Utnoor which witnessed 112 mm.

The actual rainfall of Adilabad district was 502 mm when compared to the normal rainfall of 533 mm in this monsoon so far, indicating a deficit by 6 percent. Kumram Bheem Asifabad district’s average rainfall was measured to be 70..9 mm, while Nirmal district had 65 mm of rainfall. A major portion of mandals from the two districts received heavy rains.
