Heavy rains disrupt coal mining in SCCL opencast projects

Heavy rainfall disrupted coal mining and overburden extraction in SCCL's opencast projects in Mancherial district. Waterlogging halted mining operations and stranded heavy machinery, affecting around 32,000 tonnes of coal production and 1,80,000 cubic metres of overburden extraction in a single day.

Mancherial: Coal production in opencast mining projects of the SCCL was affected by incessant rains that lashed the district on Tuesday.

The district received heavy rainfall from Monday night, bringing operations in opencast mining projects located in the Bellampalli and Mandamarri areas to a halt. Coal mining, overburden (OB) extraction and transportation of coal from the projects came to a standstill due to the inflow of rainwater. Officials estimated that the production of about 32,000 tonnes of coal was affected in a single day.

According to officials, extraction of around 1,80,000 cubic metres of overburden (OB) was disrupted due to the rains. Heavy machinery such as dumpers and excavators remained stranded in the projects due to waterlogging. They said operations would resume only after the rainwater was pumped out of the projects, and the situation would be reviewed once the rains subsided.
