Here is how you need to approach TSPSC Group-I preliminary examination

The notification for TSPSC Group I is expected anytime soon. This article aims to create awareness about the syllabus and lists the references. The first step towards preparing for any competitive examination is to understand the scheme of the examination and have a thorough knowledge of the syllabus.


Scheme of the Examination

TSPSC Group I is a three-stage examination consisting of
I. Preliminary Examination – is an objective type examination consisting of a single paper titled General Studies and Mental Ability

II. Mains Examination – is a descriptive examination consisting of six papers with each paper having a weightage of 150 marks

III. Personality Test – is an oral interview weighing 100 marks

While the preliminary examination is qualifying in nature, i.e., one must clear the exam to appear for mains; the final selection will be based on the marks scored in the mains examination and personality test.

Preliminary examination

The syllabus for the examination along with the reference books and strategy is given below:

1. Current Affairs – Regional, National & International

Current affairs is not a subject in itself, it only is the latest updates and developments in a subject. A thorough reading and follow-up of the latest current events from a standard newspaper are essential to score well in the examination. Also, a general doubt a student has with respect to current affairs is the time frame for coverage; 6 months up to the examination date is sufficient for the examination.

2. International Relations and Events

International relations is a study of the image nations have about each other and the way nations interact with each other. As far as exams of State Public Service Commissions is concerned, the focus is usually on national and regional issues. Therefore, a brief idea of all major international events till date, like – the formation of the UN, the two world wars and so on and India’s relations with other countries, especially its neighbours like – agreements signed with other countries and so on are important.
Recommended resources: IR from a standard GK book like Manorama.

3. General Science; India’s Achievements in Science and Technology

Basics of physics, chemistry, and biology along with the developments in space technology, defense technology, and biotechnology in India must be covered for this segment. All important milestones in terms of launches (satellites/missiles) that India achieved should be read along with all important institutions constituted for research and development in these fields, their location, and purpose. Recommended resources: NCERT Class 8 to 10 Science textbooks – for basics in Sciences, ISRO website – for important achievements in Science and Technology and IYB – Space Technology and Defence chapters – for achievements in Science and Technology.

4. Environmental Issues: Disaster Management- Prevention and Mitigation Strategies

Candidates must focus on concepts in the Environment (eg – meaning of sustainable development) and Disaster Management (eg – epicenter) along with the current events. Focus on the latest developments such as – summits, new species discovered, endangered species, names and location of recent disasters, and so on is essential. Recommended resources: NCERT Class 8 to 10 Disaster Management textbooks and ICSE Class 8 to 12 Environment textbooks

5. Economic and Social Development of India

Candidates must study the concepts in the economy (eg – national income; types of plans), data related to the economy (GDP, Fiscal deficit) and social development (eg – IMR, MMR, Child Sex ratio), and details of the schemes and policies launched by the Government of India.

Recommended resources: Indian Economy by Dutt and Sundaram – for concepts, NCERT Class 9 to 12 Economy textbooks – for concepts and Socio-economic survey of India – for economic data and schemes
