Hyderabad: Leather has been a huge part of the fashion industry for several decades. From dresses, to bags and jackets to footwear — leather has been the hot-favourite of fashion lovers. However, in recent years, the craft of designing leather — incorporating detailed and unique work in the product — has been the focus of the haute couture experts.
Different from fashion designing, leather designing takes into account the industry’s needs and the complexity of the sector. It involves processing of raw leather to finished leather so that it can be used for manufacturing goods and apparels; and designing, manufacturing and marketing of leather products — including fashion wears, bags, musical instruments, gift items, upholstery, leather covers for many households and electronic equipment etc.
For ages, the leather industry has been run by people who have been in the sector for generations. Several educational options, from certification courses to diploma and degree, are available in leather designing and leather technology. Many renowned Universities — including National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), GLS Institute of Design and Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) — are offering a specialised bachelor’s and post-graduate degree in leather design.
As a global industry, the field of leather designing also provides immense career opportunities. Several big companies are always on the lookout for experts in the field. Certified professionals can look for opportunities in export and domestic production, distribution, sourcing and recruitment, etc. Many fashion brands — including
Raymond Ltd, Malaga, Sabyasachi Couture, Manav Gangwani and Anita Dongre Limited — also offer high paying jobs to leather designers. Apart from the job opportunities, one can also look into starting their own venture.
