Historic Gollala Gudi temple in Mulugu added to India’s national monuments list

The Archaeological Survey of India has declared Gollala Gudi, a historic Kakatiya-era temple in Palampet village of Mulugu district, as a monument of national importance, strengthening protection for the heritage site located near the UNESCO-listed Ramappa Temple.

Hyderabad: The Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) has notified a temple ‘Gollala Gudi’ in Palampet village of Mulugu district as a monument of national importance.

The temple is located on the South-West side of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple. The temple is a ‘Trikutalaya’ and consists of a mandapa facing East and surrounded by three ‘garbhagrihas’. The parapet is adorned with sculptures, the entablature and doorways have rows of carved hamsas with jali work which are the special features of this temple.


The temple has two detached shrines in front of it, which are beautifully carved and adorned with figures of ‘dvarapalas’. They have anti-chambers in front of them which are also decorated with fine cornices and screens.

The plan of the main temple consists of a portico in front leading to the main hall center having three shrines with anti-chambers towards the North, South and West. The walls have various niches in which are images of Vishnu, Lakshmi, Ganesha and Mahishasurmardini. The temple stands on a high plinth adorned with animal figures and floral designs.

The ASI notification No. S.O. 4802(E) has been published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary), Part II, Section 3, Sub-section (ii) on August 31, 2026, an official press release said on Wednesday.
