HMWSSB, CMC identify major sewage inlets into Durgam Cheruvu during inspection

Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Boar and Cyberabad Municipal Corporation have drawn up an action plan to stop sewage inflow into Durgam Cheruvu. Officials identified four major entry points during a joint inspection and said remedial measures would be expedited, with a detailed study of the lake’s catchment planned to ensure a permanent solution.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) have prepared an action plan to permanently prevent sewage from entering Durgam Cheruvu.

During a joint inspection on Saturday, officials examined channels carrying water into the lake and identified four major inflow points: Madhapur Interception and Diversion nala, Silent Valley Interception and Diversion nala, Vittal Rao Nagar box nala and a route from the TSIIC layout. They assessed sewage flows at the inlets and planned remedial measures, the press statement said.

Officials said the existing sewage treatment plant at Durgam Cheruvu was operating at full capacity, while sewage generation had increased significantly because of rapid residential and population growth nearby. During the monsoon, excess sewage enters the lake along with rainwater.

HMWSSB joint managing director Mayank Mittal directed officials to expedite measures to stop sewage inflow completely. A detailed study of the surrounding topography, hydrology and other factors will be conducted to formulate a permanent action plan.
