Hyderabad: They say the things we learn in our childhood remain with us forever. For Shreekrishna Padhye, the stories his mother would tell him from the ‘Mahabharata’ and the ‘Ramayana’ instilled in him a curiosity to tell stories. Once he was exposed to films during his engineering, he became a fan of great directors like Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, Kishore Kumar and Steven Spielberg, and realised his true passion was filmmaking.
The writer-director was born in Pune, grew up in Karnataka and is now working in Los Angeles. He is known for his short-film ‘Misprision’, which has been screened at multiple festivals worldwide and was awarded Best Crime Drama (Short) at this year’s Five Continents International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Crime Drama at the Alternative Film Festival in Toronto.
In 2020, Shreekrishna wrote a film, ‘Miss-Connecting’, that was produced completely remotely during the Covid lockdown and went on to receive over 1,30,000 views online.
“It was during my time at the Sathya Sai Vidya Kendra in Karnataka that I got into theatre and storytelling. Although I didn’t think of it as a career choice then, it was something that brought me a lot of joy. I was good at academics, so my parents put me into an IIT institution after boarding school, and that’s when I realised that engineering wasn’t for me,” says Shreekrishna.
After graduating, he still had a thirst for learning more and he moved to Los Angeles to further his education at the New York Film Academy. In three years, he has collaborated with numerous other fellow filmmakers and worked on over 30 short-films and commercials.
Shreekrishna is currently penning a book about an Indian man who moves to the US to pursue a career but is sensitive about the idea of leaving his parents behind.
“I am also working as the head writer on a potential dark comedy TV series called ‘Supernatural’ with the Production Company called Intrigue. The story is about a haunted bed and breakfast, which is a popular attraction for horror fans who want to get up close and personal with the supernatural,” shares Shreekrishna, who recently watched the Telugu film ‘Pushpa’ and was completely blown away by the direction.
He cites Aamir Khan and Rajkummar Rao as his favourite Indian actors.
Shreekrishna is also writing a feature film called ‘Underwater Phoenix’ with the production company 80/20 Pictures. “I absolutely enjoy watching mobster movies like ‘Goodfellas’, ‘Godfather’ and ‘Sarkar’ and I wanted to pen a movie like that but based on a father-son equation. ‘Underwater Phoenix’ comes under this category,” he says.
The director adds that he is the first person in his family to pursue a creative career and has now inspired his younger sister Tejashree to start a hand-printed saris clothing store called Mogasu in Goa. He hopes to inspire many others with his story.
