Hyderabad: Transplant surgeons at Apollo Hospitals have successfully conducted a combined heart and lung transplant on a terminally ill 25-year-old woman on July 20. The recipient, who was suffering from a congenital heart disease had been waiting for a suitable donor heart and lung for the past two-and-half years.
Due to her medical condition, the organ recipient Labdhi Jain at the time of listing for State-run Jeevandan donation initiative just weighed 30 kilograms, which prolonged her wait for a suitable organ donor.
The combined heart and lung transplant surgery was led by noted CT surgeon from the hospital Dr Alla Gopala Krishna Gokhale. Due to the congenital defect, patients’ condition has worsened and she was surviving on oxygen support at home, while waiting for a donor heart and lung.
As luck would have it, recently a cadaver heart and lung was obtained from an 18-year-old girl, who was pronounced brain dead due to brain stroke. “Despite the immense sorrow of losing their child, the donor’s family displayed courage and benevolence and gave consent to harvest their brain dead daughter’s organs. This brought joy back in the life of another family,” Dr Gokhale said.
Following the surgery, the recipient has recovered well and during the time of the discharge weighed nearly 38 kilograms.
