Hyderabad: As many as 2,500 persons were caught for driving under the influence of alcohol in a special drive during New Year’s eve celebrations. The drive was conducted from Friday night to Saturday morning in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda limits.
Out of the 2,500 cases booked, Hyderabad Traffic police alone booked 1,260 cases against drunk drivers followed by 870 cases in Cyberabad and 370 in Rachakonda police limits.

The number of cases booked is a record of sorts against the cases which were booked in previous years. A large number of cases were booked by cops in Gachibowli, Madhapur, Kukatpally, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Begumpet, Neredmet, Uppal and LB Nagar.

Traffic police said the seized vehicles, which were shifted to respective police stations, included bikes, cars and auto-rickshaws. The persons caught during the drive will have to undergo counselling at Traffic Training Institutes. They will also be produced before the court which may sentence them to imprisonment and impose fines as well.

Officials said that many of those caught for drunk driving were under the impression that since they had only a limited intake of alcohol, it would have no effect on them and that they could drive perfectly. The legally permissible limit of alcohol in blood in India is only 30 mg/100 ml of blood.

“The effect of alcohol on the human body is not uniform in all persons and it depends on numerous factors. Any quantity of alcohol would definitely have an impact on the judgment and responsiveness of a person that affects their driving skills,” officials said.

Drunk driving and driving by unauthorised persons have been major causes of road accidents and fatalities. Citizens need to be responsible and make alternative travel arrangements when they are under the influence of alcohol, they added.
