Hyderabad: 45,000 Annapurna meals served to needy on Thursday
Expanding the network of Annapurna meals to cover more needy people during the present lockdown, the civic body has decided to set up an additional 102 canteens

Hyderabad: Amid the lockdown imposed to contain the second wave of Covid pandemic, the Annapurna canteens offering hot and hygienic meals for Rs 5 are turning to be a boon especially for daily wage workers, hawkers and people living in shelter homes.
Presently, across the city around 45,000 meals are being provided by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). In addition to the present canteens, dozens of new canteens have started their operations on Thursday.
On Thursday, 250 canteens served food to more than 45,000 persons in different parts of the city. Expanding the network of Annapurna meals to cover more needy people during the present lockdown, the civic body has decided to set up an additional 102 canteens in addition to the existing ones.
“By May 14, the new canteens proposed will be opened and start to serve the meals. On Thursday, the deputy commissioners inspected the canteens in their respective zones,” said a GHMC official.
After having the meal comprising of a vegetable curry, sambar and pickle besides rice, the beneficiaries, most of them from economically weaker sections, guest labourers, lauded the initiative and thanked the State government for coming to their aid in these hard times.
