Hyderabad: As people look to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in an eco-friendly way, the demand for clay Ganesh idols in Hyderabad has increased over the last few years. To ensure people have access to clay idols and celebrate the festival in an environmental-friendly way, the municipal authorities are pulling out all stops and have made elaborate arrangements for supply of clay Ganesh idols free of cost across Hyderabad.
Ahead of the festival on Friday, around 1.3 lakh clay idols are being distributed in the city.
As part of environmental conservation measures, on behalf of the State government, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is distributing around 60,000 idols and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is distributing 70,000 idols for free.

While the GHMC is distributing the idols mostly in its ward officials, the HMDA has set up 19 temporary stalls in the city. Nanakramguda circle, Financial District, Greenlands Road and Kundan Bagh in Begumpet are some locations where the idols were distributed on Wednesday by HMDA.
The Metropolitan Development Authority also pressed into service four mobile teams which distributed the idols in RV Panchajanya Colony in Kondapur, Maturshree Nagar in Miyapur and HUDA complex in Tarnaka.
In a yet another unique attempt at promoting eco-friendly Ganesh idols in Hyderabad, the GHMC officials at Kukatpally zone are organising workshops where people are taught on preparing such idols on their own. The interactive workshops have been a huge draw, as large number of participants turn up at venues to learn making clay Ganesh idols on their own. A similar workshop will be organised at Gajularamaram GHMC circle office on Thursday from 9 am to 12 noon.
TASA comes up with seed Ganesha
Hyderabad: Two students associated with the Telangana Agricultural Students Association (TASA) have joined the State Government’s efforts to conserve environment by coming up with ‘Plant a Vignesha’, a unique seed Ganesha kit that comes with an innovative seed pen and a geo-fabric bag that can become a sapling pot.
The Ganesh idol itself has six seeds including two seeds of flowering plants, two seeds of vegetable plants and two seeds of leafy vegetable plant. The kit also contains a pen with 10 seeds that grows into a plant. The students have used different seeds for each pen including chilli, tomato, carrot etc. Even the Geo fabric bag can be used as a sapling pot.
The enterprising youth on Wednesday tagged Municipal Administration Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao seeking his help to make the kit popular.
“Last year, we prepared around 1,000 idols and the response was very good. Unfortunately this year we prepared 3,000 idols but the response is poor,” said Prem Satish from Prena Agri Nature Pvt Ltd, an agricultural start up. The kits cost between Rs 500 and Rs 600. For details: 91778-40999.
