Hyderabad: A 24-year-old house surgeon Dr N Bhumika Reddy gave a new lease of life to five different individuals, despite losing her own life in a tragic road accident.
On Saturday, February 1, the medical house surgeon, from Kamineni Hospitals, L B Nagar, who was travelling in a car, met with an accident when her car hit a road divider at Khanapur. The family members immediately rushed her to Continental Hospitals where she was under emergency care for nearly a week.
With no improvement in her health, the hospital doctors declared Bhumika as brain dead on Saturday, February 8. Despite losing her own battle with injuries, the family of the young doctor ensured her death did not go in vain, as they decided to donate her organs including heart, liver, lungs and two kidneys (in all five organs), to five different patients, under the State-run Jeevandan organ donation initiative.
Continental Hospitals Chairman Dr Guru N Reddy extended condolences at the loss of a bright, young doctor. “My deepest condolences to the family of Dr Bhumika in this difficult time, I feel profoundly sad that a young surgeon is no more with us, and I laud their extraordinary, bold gesture to donate the organs to help save five other lives,” said Dr Reddy.
Dr Bhumika was a bright and meritorious student, training to be a surgeon one day. She was the only child of her parents. The Jeevandan officials expressed their gratitude to the family members for the novel gesture.
