Hyderabad: In a significant philanthropic gesture, businessman and social worker Abdul Muqeet Chanda has committed Rs 50 lakh towards the education of deserving orphaned and meritorious students under the ‘Gift A Smile’ initiative.

The announcement comes on the occasion of his elder son’s wedding, where the family decided to curtail unnecessary and extravagant expenditure, including lavish decorations and other avoidable expenses. The funds saved from these measures are being channelled towards a social cause aimed at supporting education for underprivileged students.

In collaboration with the Sir Syed Society, Muqeet Chanda and his team are identifying academically bright students studying in government institutions, with particular emphasis on orphaned children and those belonging to economically weaker sections. Under the initiative, the annual tuition fees of selected students will be borne for one academic year.

To maximise the reach of the programme, several educational institutions have agreed to extend a 50 per cent concession in tuition fees following an appeal by the Sir Syed Society.

The Gift A Smile initiative seeks to ensure that financial hardships do not become an obstacle to quality education. Organisers said the programme aims to empower talented students, helping them continue their studies and pursue their aspirations with confidence.

Abdul Muqeet Chanda said, “A wedding is a moment of joy for a family, and we felt it was important to share that happiness with those who need support the most. Education is the most powerful tool to transform lives, and through the ‘Gift A Smile’ initiative, we hope to ensure talented students are not deprived of opportunities due to financial difficulties. If even a few students are able to achieve their dreams through this effort, it will be the greatest blessing for our family.”
