Hyderabad: The world has been witnessing several selfless acts of kindness since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of the citizens have turned into volunteers and are helping the needy in every way possible. One such capeless hero is a 24-year-old, Hyderabad-based Shivani Yasaswi, who goes out of her way to help the Covid patients, despite being infected herself.

“I and my family tested Covid-19 positive on April 18. I had fever and sore throat. So, we took all the precautions and quarantined ourselves as soon as we developed the symptoms,” she says.

After being diagnosed, Shivani started researching on Covid and became a part of various groups on social media, who were helping out the Covid-19 patients. “I joined WhatsApp groups which are helping people with various information like the bed status, availability of oxygen cylinders, etc. Initially, I didn’t contribute much, however slowly I started filtering the verified information and giving it to people who needed it,” she says.

As soon as someone put up a query in the group, she would look for information and then verify it by calling the numbers and check if the information was accurate. “I must have made thousands of calls to various hospitals in the city,” she says.

However, with the shortage of beds and unavailability of oxygen cylinders, it wasn’t possible to help everyone.

“Sometimes we get the bed or medicines arranged in no time. But other times, it takes a lot of effort. It bothers me sometimes, but as a volunteer, you have to understand that there is only so much you can do. But now I can’t take a break because there are so many people who need help,” says Shivani who works as a corporate trainer with a leading MNC.
