Hyderabad: To take its fight against drugs to the next level, the Hyderabad City Police are setting up two special units to exclusively deal with drug cases.
While the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (HNEW) will deal with organized drug trafficking, the Narcotics Investigation Supervision Wing (NISW) will help investigating officers make foolproof cases and ensure convictions.
City Police Commissioner CV Anand said the HNEW would function from the CP’s Office and a DCP rank officer would supervise its functioning. Two Inspectors, four Sub- inspectors and 20 constables would work in the unit.
“The work of the unit includes gathering intelligence, tracking down suppliers, peddlers and consumers and disrupting their activities. It will also maintain a database of all persons involved in drug cases,” he said.
The initiative would help the police in the long run as a dedicated unit would ensure proper tackling of the illicit drug trade and maintain a constant watch on both local and international drug peddlers. “The unit will function on lines of any special team and will be provided with all infrastructure, vehicles and funds,” he said.
The NISW would be headed by an ACP rank officer and assisted by an Inspector and a Sub-inspector with a support staff of six head constables or constables.
“The basic responsibility of this unit will be to supervise investigations of drug cases at local police stations. It will help in ensuring convictions,” the CP said, adding that the unit would also monitor trials and train local police personnel in dealing with drug cases.
Both the units will be inaugurated by DGP M Mahender Reddy on Wednesday.
