Hyderabad: The works on cleaning the famed Katora Houz at Golconda in the city have commenced. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken up cleaning of the historic tank on Sunday and has deployed JCBs for the purpose.
MA&UD Principal Secretary, Arvind Kumar, took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to inform the commencement of the cleaning process of the 16th century water body located a kilometer away from Golconda Fort. “Katora Houz cleaning begins. FTC (Floating Trash Collector’s) wasn’t possible because of lack of depth and we are doing it with JCBs,” he tweeted.
The GHMC had planned to clean up Katora Houz last year but the plans to start works were hampered due to Covid-19 pandemic. Wild weed and hyacinth had carpeted the water body as locals also dispose garbage and trash in it. After representation from the local MLA Kauser Mohiuddin, the civic body had allocated funds for cleaning the water body and the works commenced.
A part of Golconda Fort, the tank was constructed in the 16 century for water storage. There were underground channels leading to Durgam Cheruvu in Jubilee Hills from where water used to flow into Katora Houz.
