Hyderabad: Giving a local name to a universally known drug can tug on some heartstrings, and help in business as well.
That is what Suresh Kumar, an Intermediate dropout working as a sanitary supervisor at a private chemical factory in Jeedimetla and a native of Jalore in Rajasthan, did to bolster his heroin peddling business.
The arrest of the 24-year-old Suresh Kumar along with four of his clients has revealed how the Rajasthani peddler was garnering clients from Rajasthan, mostly those working here, by calling the heroin he sold ‘halam’ or ‘hafeem’, as it was called in local drug parlance in Rajasthan, police said.
The case, which marked the first arrests for the recently constituted Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) and the Narcotics Investigation Supervision Wing (NISW), saw Suresh Kumar being nabbed with 75 grams of heroin, while four of his clients – Kailash Purohit, Sunil, Kavara Ram and Prakash – all from Rajasthan, were also arrested.
According to the police, acting on a tip-off, the H-NEW team led by inspector P Rajesh along with the Shahalibanda police had nabbed Suresh Kumar, after which his trade secret was revealed.
“Suresh during his stay in the city noticed that some persons from Rajasthan staying in Hyderabad were using heroin. During his recent visit to Rajasthan, he met one Jayanthilal Manju from whom he brought the drug and started selling it to them under the names ‘hamal’ and ‘hafeem’ as it is called in Rajasthan,” officials said.
“Suresh brought the drug at low prices and sold it at higher prices here,” H-NEW DCP Gummi Chakravarthy said.
The arrested persons, along with the seized drug, were handed over to the Shahalibanda police for further action.
The H-NEW and NISW were recently constituted by the Hyderabad City Police to tackle the drug menace in the city and were launched Telangana DGP M Mahender Reddy earlier this week.
