Hyderabad: Showing that no profile would be left alone, cybercrooks on Tuesday faked the official account of the Madhapur Station House Officer. The almost near replica of the profile, SHO Madhapur, then targeted all those on the friends list of the profile and sent messages seeking money.
According to the police, the incident came to light after a few persons received messages on Facebook Messenger asking for money.
“They created a fake profile and sent friend requests to random people. After they accepted the friend request, the suspects started asking them for money citing various reasons,” said an official, adding that the Madhapur police booked a case.
The police urged citizens not to accept friend requests from strangers and if any person requests money, it is always better to call them and confirm. Several fake profiles of genuine persons are being made, with requests sent to people seen on that person’s friends list. Any person requesting money on Facebook, by all means, could be a fraud, they said, adding that one should also ensure proper security on Facebook including by locking one’s profile.
