Hyderabad: Doctors at Aware Gleneagles Global Hospital, LB Nagar on Thursday said they have successfully treated a 52-year-old patient from Hyderabad, Nageshwar Rao who was suffering from a bleeding intestinal tumour located close to pancreas.
The location of the tumour, which was on small-intestine, and close to other vital organs increased risk to life of the patient. He was diagnosed with Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST), which are uncommon cancers that start in special cells in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, and the cancer was in an advanced stage.
“GISTs are curable if detected in an early stage. But in this case, it was a bleeding tumour at an advanced stage, and located very close to pancreas. Due to low haemoglobin levels, the patient’s condition had to be stabilized, before taking any further surgical action. We first treated the patient for his low haemoglobin levels, and then removed the tumour without causing any harm to pancreas or any other vital organs.
The patient’s failing health condition was revived, he was operated on, and discharged from the hospital on day five,” Dr. Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad, senior gastro surgeon, Aware Gleneagles Global Hospital, said.
The team of doctors who performed the surgical procedure included Dr. Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad, Dr Mohan, Dr Shivanand and Dr Praveen, a press release release added.
