Hyderabad: Doctors at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) saved the life of a 16-year-old boy from Hyderabad, who was admitted to the hospital after ingesting multiple razor blades.

The youngster, Md Mujebur Rehman, who has a history of mental health illness, was brought to the hospital at around 2 am on Thursday and was immediately taken to the casualty ward, according to OGH authorities.

The youngster immediately underwent an X-ray, which revealed multiple radio-opaque blade pieces in his stomach and was immediately referred to Medical Gastroenterology.

The hospital’s Medical Gastroenterology team, led by Professor and Head Dr. B. Ramesh Kumar, immediately conducted a technically challenging, life-saving minimally invasive procedure to safely remove three razor blade pieces from the youngster’s stomach.

The team conducted a GI Endoscopy procedure to remove multiple pieces of razor blades (sharp foreign body). “The procedure was challenging because there’s always chances of internal injuries in the form of lacerations and perforations,” Dr Ramesh Kumar said.

The Medical Gastroenterology team at OGH has vast experience and expertise in endoscopic removal of various types of foreign bodies in the past, senior health officials from OGH said.

Immediate post procedure patient recovery is uneventful and the patient is doing well, doctors added.
