Hyderabad: A team of doctors at Osmania General Hospital performed for the first time a life-saving emergency liver transplant on a 17-year-old girl, giving a new lease of life.
Blessy Goud, a resident of Film Nagar, turned up at the OGH with serious and critical condition (gasping state). She was admitted to Surgical Gastroenterology ICU with acute fulminant liver failure on May 12. The patient also reported suffering from deep jaundice.
Blessy’s condition, according to the doctors, was critical and needed a liver transplant within 48 hours. In general, due to the high waiting list, it takes a long time for cadaver liver organs in Jeevandan.
However, under the super urgent category allocation policy/lifesaving liver allocation policy for Acute Fulminant Liver Failure cases, available in Telangana, the patient was operated on.
“For the first time in the government hospital’s history, we did emergency liver transplantation for Acute Fulminant Liver Failure under super urgent category with the help of Jeevandan on May 14. Patient recovered well and was discharged in fit condition after two weeks. Now, she is writing her BTech first year exams,” the OGH doctors said.
