Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has sounded alarm bells for the upcoming summer, projecting a shortfall of 100 million gallons per day (MGD) in water supply from the crucial Singur and Manjeera sources between January and August.
HMWSSB Managing Director K Ashok Reddy cited reduced rainfall caused by El Niño and falling water levels in the Singur and Manjeera reservoirs as factors that could hamper drinking water supply this summer.
Speaking at the launch of the ‘Paani App’ on Thursday, Ashok Reddy said the city was receiving 560 to 570 MGD daily, but declining groundwater levels had sharply increased demand for water tankers. A shortfall of around 100 MGD from the Singur and Manjeera sources was expected between next January and August.
The water board has taken steps to draw an additional 60 MGD from the Godavari, Krishna and Osman Sagar sources. However, a deficit of 40 to 50 MGD could remain, affecting nearly three lakh connections from Patancheru to Narsingi. An emergency action plan has been submitted to the government, he said.
Earlier, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar launched the ‘Paani App’, enabling citizens to alert HMWSSB officials about water misuse. Interested citizens can register as water volunteers through the Water Board’s official website: https://erp.hyderabadwater.gov.in/walc/VolunteerRegistration.aspx.
