Hyderabad: Five liver transplant surgeries at Osmania General Hospital in one month

Hyderabad: Five liver transplant surgeries, including three cadaver and two live, were performed on patients suffering from rare genetic liver diseases by the transplant surgeons at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in the month of January.

Dr Ch Madhusudhan, OGH Head, Surgical Gastroenterology, who led the team of care givers from multiple departments, said “generally these surgeries cost around Rs 30 to Rs 40 lakh in private hospitals and because of their poor financial status, they were unable to afford it. Doing five liver transplants in 30 days at a Government hospital is big achievement.”


Ajith Kumar (2), whose parents are daily wagers in Khammam, was suffering from chronic liver disease with liver cancer due to Tyrosinemia Type 1 disease. His grandmother Swathi donated a portion of her liver.

Sathwik Goud (7) from Suryapet, was diagnosed with Wilsons disease, a genetic disorder that causes excessive copper accumulation in liver and brain, leading to cirrhosis. He also underwent live donor liver transplant when his mother, Naga Jyothi, donated left lobe of liver.

G.Venkatesh (20) from Jogulamba Gadwal, M. Harsha Priya (20) from Hanamakonda and M. Venkatesh (40) of Yadadri suffering liver cirrhosis due to Neuro Wilson’s disease underwent cadaver liver transplants in the hospital.
