Hyderabad: The former sarpanch of Pedda Shapur was arrested on charges of cheating and forgery by the Shamshabad police here on Wednesday. Though he was not in office, he allegedly used official rubber stamps on permission letters and issued building permissions on the names of his family members and others.

He also cheated the poor and homeless in the gram panchayat by selling them such land, police said.

The suspect S. Isra Naik, a resident of Pedda Shapur thanda and village had ceased to be a sarpanch in 2011, but allegedly cheated people claiming he was still in the post. He along with his associates J. Raji Reddy and others grabbed land in the village and converted them into plots and sold them to people, police said.

Based on a complaint, the Shamshabad police booked a case and arrested Naik.
