Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police on Thursday arrested M. Indrajith Varma, a friend of B.Vishwa Teja, who was killed in a road crash near Hitex in Madhapur last week on charges of instigating Teja to drive in an inebriated condition. He was booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Officials said Varma who was aware that his friend was in a drunk condition negligently allowed him to drive, resulting in the car crashing into a road median and turning over near Hitex in the early hours of March 26. Teja suffered grievous injuries and died in the crash.

“Varma was sitting beside Teja but fled the spot without intimating the police nor calling in an ambulance though he knew his friend was severely injured,” police said.

The Madhapur police booked a case and subsequently nabbed Varma, who was produced before court and remanded in judicial custody.

According to the police, both had consumed alcohol together and Teja started to drive the car with Varma allowing him to do. This amounted to abetment to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, they said.

“Persons who consume alcohol together and if one allows the other to drive under the influence of alcohol, that person will also be prosecuted for the abetment of the crime as per the facts of each case,” said SM Vijay Kumar, DCP (Traffic), Cyberabad.
