Hyderabad: The passing out parade of 72 canines from various police units across the country which completed an intensive eight-month training was conducted at the Integrated Intelligence Training Academy (IITA) at Moinabad on Friday.

Director General (Intelligence) B Shivadhar Reddy participated in the passing out parade of the 24th batch of the All-India Level Canine Basic Induction Course. He emphasised the critical role of these highly trained canines and their handlers in safeguarding society.

This year’s batch comprised 72 canines and 101 handlers from various State and Central police units, including Telangana, Bihar, Goa, Tripura, CISF, RGIA, and RPF (Secunderabad and Vijayawada).

The canines — 36 Labrador Retrievers, 8 German Shepherds, and 28 Belgian Malinois — were rigorously trained in specialised areas such as the detection of explosives, narcotics, and liquor, besides tracking, and assault operations.

Since its inception in 2004, the Canine Training Centre has successfully trained 843 canines and 1,205 handlers.

These well-trained canine units play an indispensable role in anti-sabotage operations, VIP and VVIP security, bomb threat responses, narcotics control, and crime investigations.
