Hyderabad: An elderly couple who murdered their daughter-in-law and surreptitiously buried the body was arrested after their son complained to the police about his missing wife.

According to the police, the victim, M Dhooli (38), had a love marriage with M Suresh, a car driver from the same thanda, against the wish of the latter’s parents about 20 years ago. The couple has two children, both sons.

However, ever since their son’s marriage, Dhooli’s in-laws — Tulasi Ram and Ananthi — bore a grudge against Dhooli and did not keep a cordial relationship with her. Suresh was addicted to alcohol and had frequent fights with Dhooli, following which they had considered divorce too.

Following such incidents, Dhooli’s in-laws decided to eliminate her and waited for an opportunity. In November 2024, the elderly couple called Dhooli to a secluded spot near Satamrai in Shamshabad and gave her toddy laced with poison.

After she fell unconscious, the couple, along with Ananthi’s brother, Hanuma, bludgeoned Dhooli’s head with a stone and killed her on the spot. As Dhooli was missing, her husband lodged a complaint with the Shamshabad police on November 14, and a case was booked.

Even as the police, who alerted all local police stations and formed special teams to trace Dhooli, Suresh informed them of his suspicions about his parents’ role behind his wife having gone missing.

Tulasi and Ananthi were detained for questioning, and after they spilled the beans, Hanuma was also arrested. The Shamshabad police booked a murder case and investigating. With the help of forensic medicine experts, Dhooli’s body was exhumed after about a 12-hour-long process on Thursday.
