Hyderabad: A joint survey of Defence land linked to the proposed two alternative roads, Safilguda Level Crossing to Entrenchment Road and Safilguda Level Crossing to R K Puram Road Over Bridge (RoB), surrounding the Army Ordnance Corps (AoC) Circle in Secunderabad Cantonment, was completed, marking a major step in the project.

Officials of the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) confirmed to ‘Telangana Today’ that Defence officials from Telangana Andhra Sub Area (TASA), MMC, the Defence Estates Officer, Telangana, and Secunderabad Cantonment carried out the joint survey.

Sources said that to build a 2.91-kilometre alternative road from Safilguda Level Crossing to Entrenchment Road, MMC will acquire 24 acres of Defence land, and will also need another 10 acres of Defence land to construct another alternative road from Safilguda Level Crossing to RK Puram RoB. The officials of the MMC were waiting for the transfer of nearly 42 acres of Defence land required for the project, according to sources.

The then BRS govt initiated a proposal in 2017 to construct the two alternative roads following the frequent closure of AoC roads, Allahabad Gate and Wellington Road, citing a security threat. The closure activity led to protests by commuters and resident welfare associations (RWAs) in the North-East part of Secunderabad.

The State government accorded permission to transfer 153 acres of its government land at the Firing Range near Shamirpet at a recent Cabinet meeting.

The erstwhile GHMC completed the tenders, and the project was being taken up under the H-CITI (Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure) at a cost of nearly Rs 1,000 crore. As part of the trifurcation of GHMC, the project was transferred to MMC.

The transfer of Defence land from TASA was in progress, and officials expected the official orders to come on the first of June, a senior MMC official said. Works may likely commence by the end of June or after the rainy season, added the official.

Proposed two alternative Roads at a Glance:

Safilguda Level Crossing to Entrenchment Road: six-lane road (100-ft wide)

Length: 2.91 kilometres: Defence land: 23.94 acres

Safilguda Level Crossing to R K Puram Road Over Bridge (RoB)-four-lane road (60-ft wide)

Length: 2 kilometres

Areas benefited:

Over 4 lakh population of Malkajgiri, Defence Colony, Sainikpuri, Safilguda, Sainath Puram and Yapral, ECIL, Kapra, Anand Bagh, Moula Ali, adjoining 10 areas.

Roads may close at AOC circle in future:

Ordnance Road, Gough Road, Mornington Road, Entrenchment Road and Wellington Road.
