Hyderabad: Surgeons at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Secunderabad, have salvaged a badly damaged right leg of a 47-year-old farmer from amputation, when he suffered multiple injuries in a road accident, a press release said.

The farmer met with an accident when he rammed his two-wheeler into a pillar while trying to avoid getting hit by an oncoming vehicle at Madanapalli, Sangareddy. In the accident, the farmer’s right long bone was fractured, his foot was crushed, arteries and muscles of the leg were damaged, which affected the blood flow. Usually, in such cases, when blood flow to the injured part is arrested, surgeons go for amputation.

However, senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Srinivas Kasha collaborated with plastic and vascular surgeons of the hospital and attempted to salvage right leg.

The surgeons from the three specialities conducted a series of surgeries following which, the right leg regained blood flow. Later, plastic surgeons conducted a surgery to cover the right foot defect by taking a piece of muscle from thigh region. After a week of plastic surgery, the doctors conducted one more surgery. Four weeks into rehabilitation, the farmer is now able to move with the help of a walker, doctors said.
