Hyderabad: A woman was set ablaze by a man with whom she was allegedly in a live-in relationship at Moosapet in Kukatpally on Wednesday late night. While the woman died, the assailant who too was injured in the bid, remains critical.
Venkata Lakshmi (50), who worked as a contract sweeper at the ESI Hospital in Nacharam, lost her husband a decade ago and was survived by son and a daughter.
Police said, nearly eight year ago, she developed a relationship with one Venkatesh (55) from Rajiv Gruhakalpa in Jagathgirigutta, who had a welding shop and lives with his son. Eventually, the duo became intimate and started living together with their children.
However, few years ago, due to some differences between them, Venkata Lakshmi moved out of the house and started living in Prashanth Nagar in Kukatpally with her son.
“Venkatesh started pressurising her to return to him and stay with him. But, she did not accept and this angered him, and he developed a grudge against her,” police said.
With an intention to eliminate her, Venkatesh came to her house on Thursday night, in the absence of Venkata Lakshmi’s son, and picked up a fight. It is suspected that during a heated argument, Venkatesh poured kerosene on her and set ablaze. In the attempt, he too suffered serious burns.
The neighbours, who heard cries and thick smoke emanating from Venkata Lakshmi’s house rushed to her rescue and found her lying dead with her body engulfed in flames. Venkatesh was immediately shifted to the Osmania General Hospital, where his condition is said to be critical. The Kukatpally police are investigating.
