Hyderabad: With the monsoon causing havoc and commuters experiencing significant traffic jams, engineering and town planning officials of the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) carried out a week-long exercise to identify damaged potholes and water logging locations, along with another 24 critical locations to provide free-left turns, to ensure better traffic management.

MMC commissioner T Vinay Krishna Reddy on Saturday convened a coordination meeting and invited the top brass of Police, HMWSSB, TGSPDCL, HYDRAA and HMDA to chalk out a plan of action to be implemented to ensure road safety for commuters.

Regarding potholes, out of 176 pothole or damaged-road spots identified by the traffic police, 171 were located on the civic body’s roads. Officials were instructed to take up patchwork and road repairs in these areas on priority, according to a press release.

The officials also decided to develop free-left turns at 24 locations to reduce congestion at signal junctions and allow smoother movement. These locations include Uppal X Roads, Habsiguda X Roads, Survey of India and Snehapuri Junction. In addition, 98 road safety works were also identified.

As for water logging, out of 188 points were identified in the corporation area, 90 locations still required permanent solutions. Officials were advised to prioritise desilting works to improve the capacity of related nalas and stormwater drains, and to align these efforts with ongoing nala development works. A total of 127 encroachments across six major road stretches will be shortly cleared.
