Hyderabad: Angered over his son not studying properly, an alcoholic father set ablaze his 10-year-old son in KPHB here on Sunday late night.
R Charan, a Class VI student of a government school in Kukatpally, lived with his family in a hut near Mandal Parishad School in KPHB Colony. According to police, on Sunday around 10 pm, Charan’s father Balu, a painter, returned home and found the boy watching television and began scolding him.
“He first sent Charan to a nearby pan shop to get a cigarette packet, which he did. Even as he returned, Balu slapped the boy and scolded him saying he was not studying well and not attending tuition regularly,” police said, adding that Balu continued to beat the boy. Despite his wife protesting, Balu dragged him out of the house onto the street.
“He then took a bottle of turpentine and doused the boy after which he set him ablaze,” police said.
Charan ran even as he was on fire and slipped into a pit a few metres away, by which time his mother, sister and neighbours rushed to his rescue and doused the flames with water. He was rushed to Gandhi Hospital where his condition is stated to be critical. Based on a complaint, the KPHB police booked a case and have taken Balu into custody.
