Hyderabad: Surgeons at SLG Hospitals, Nizampet have conducted a 12-hour-long surgery on a 48-year-old patient who was suffering from a rare form of inflammation of heart arteries known as ‘Takayasu’s Arteritis’, a medical condition in which large and medium-sized blood vessels are inflamed and damaged.
The patient B Venkatesham, a native of Siddipet, was admitted to the hospital on August 14 with uncontrolled hypertension and scans revealed that portion of his aorta was damaged completely and grafting had to be done to rectify the complication.
“Considering the complexity of the procedure, the patient’s body had to be cooled down to 18 degrees, and blood flow in the body had to be stabilized. Post procedure, the patient was kept under observation for a week, and was discharged on August 26,” said Dr. Vivek Babu Bojjawar, CT surgeon, SLG Hospitals.
Due to fragile health and complexity of the procedure performed, the patient has to undergo regular health check-ups in the near future. Senior cardiologist, Dr. Bhanu Kiran Reddy, Head, ICU, Dr. Suhasini Tirumala, Cardiac Anaesthetist, Dr. Amar and others were involved in the procedure.
