Hyderabad: The recent launch of drug Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) in India by US-based pharma company Eli Lilly has generated a lot of interest and hype due to its unique ability to be effective towards both weight management and treatment of type 2 diabetes.

While it is not a silver bullet that can resolve all the health issues related to obesity and type-2 diabetes, it is being billed by doctors as the best drug in weight management, compared to similar drugs available in the market.

Based on reports and assessments by doctors, if taken consistently through prescription and appropriate dosage fixed by the doctor, Mounjaro can lead to a 2 point drop in HbA1c points and at least 20 per cent weight loss among diabetics and obese patients.

“The drug is not a silver bullet. However, if take in a right way and supplemented through lifestyle changes and exercise, then diabetics and obese people could benefit. However, there are chances that once the drug is stopped, then they might regain weight. One must be always cautious and follow doctors advise,” senior cardiologist, Dr Mukherjee Madivada posted on X (formerly Twitter).

According to reports, Mounjaro works by activating glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagone-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors. These hormones are known to play a crucial role in regulating sugar levels and appetite. The dual action is believed to contribute to its enhanced effectiveness.

Taking to X, senior neurologist from Hyderabad, Dr Sudhir Kumar said while Mounjaro is effective in treating type-2 diabetes and obesity, it is still better to avoid reaching a stage when one would need to take such medicines.

“Overweight, obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus can be prevented in a significant number of people with lifestyle modification, such as healthy diet, exercise and good sleep,” he said. Mounjaro is a strictly prescribed drug and is available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg form with a total monthly expenditure costing close to Rs 14,000.
