Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Police’s job mela, popular as Job Connect, made a different kind of connection on Saturday, taking the initiative a notch higher by enabling participation of transgender persons, and even by giving them a shot at jobs with a multinational firm.
The event, inaugurated City Police Commissioner CV Anand at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium at Yousufguda on Saturday had thousands of participants, but what stood out was a group of 40 transgenders from the nearby Krishnanagar.
Shilpa, one of the transgenders, who came to the venue, thanked the City Police for extending an invite to them. “We want to work and earn a decent livelihood. People have a negative notion about us. We want to prove that perception wrong,” said Shilpa.
Madhushalini, another transgender, said executives of a popular multinational firm engaged in online shopping and sales had met them and assured to absorb them into the company.
“They told us that we will be informed shortly about it,” said Madhushalini.
Jubilee Hills Inspector S Rajasekhar Reddy said the local police, following complaints of illegal activities involving a group of transgenders, had counseled them and asked them to reform their lives.
“We informed them about Job Connect and all of them came to participate. We hope that companies will slowly start absorbing them after seeing their zeal to work,” he said.
Commissioner Anand said around 100 companies had come forward and participated in the event.
Speaking on the occasion Anand said youngsters should avail job opportunities in the private sector too.
“Community outreach is very important and Job Connect is one such flagship programme of the Hyderabad City Police to provide livelihood to the unemployed youth. Unemployment may also lead to increase in crime rate as the jobless youth may resort to illegal activities for livelihood,” he added.
