Hyderabad police refund Rs 2.91 lakh to victim of cyber fraud
According to the police, the man received a phone call from a person who claimed to be a representative of a private bank and offered an increase in the credit card limit. The caller then collected details of the credit card and sent an APK file to him on WhatsApp.
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad police facilitated a refund of Rs. 2.91 lakh to a victim who had lost the amount to cyber fraudsters.
According to the police, the man received a phone call from a person who claimed to be a representative of a private bank and offered an increase in the credit card limit. The caller then collected details of the credit card and sent an APK file to him on WhatsApp.
“The victim installed the application on his mobile phone and later found an amount of Rs. 2.91 lakh was debited although he had not disclosed the OTP (one time password),” said officials.
The victim promptly lodged a complaint with the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) who identified the malware on his mobile and removed it. The police identified the amount was used to make purchases on an e-commerce platform and the NCRP issued notices to the concerned who blocked the funds and later the amount was refunded to the bank account of the victim.
