Hyderabad: After a brief lull, the Railway police launched a crackdown on peddlers smuggling marijuana from Odisha to Mumbai via Hyderabad by train.
Following instructions from Additional Director-General of Police (Railways) Sandeep Sandilya, a constant vigil was maintained on passengers moving suspiciously. This resulted in busting a marijuana racket on Saturday with the Railway police arresting six persons for smuggling marijuana from Berhampur in Odisha to Mumbai.
The police seized 82 kg of marijuana worth Rs 16.4 lakh from the possession of the arrested persons identified as Premananda Mallick (23), Nira Mallick (26), Raju Mallick (28) and Akhaya Mallick (19), all natives of Odisha, and Suban Haider Shaikh (42) and Haji Mastan Ramzan Shaikh (36), both natives of Maharashtra.
According to police, the gang was transporting dry marijuana from Berhampur of Odisha to Mumbai for selling it to needy customers. After reaching Secunderabad station, they were waiting at the general waiting hall on platform number one along with three trolley luggage bags and two backpacks containing 27 packets of dry marijuana, weighing 54 kg approximately worth Rs 10.80 lakh when the police detained them.
Two more bags containing eight packets of marijuana weighing about 13 kg were found when the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) was checking passengers at gate number five on the station premises.
During checking at platform number one, the police seized two more bags containing 15 kg of contraband. The peddlers brought marijuana separately in Garib Rath and Janmabhoomi express trains.
Premananda was a supplier of marijuana, while Suban Haider and Haji Mastan Ramzan were sellers and Nira Mallick, Raju Malik and Akhaya Mallick were transporters, according to police officials.
The police registered cases against them under provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested them.
