Hyderabad records highest rainfall of season; parts of city received over 150 mm of rain

Hyderabad: After a pause that resulted in a hot and humid weekend, heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms returned to Hyderabad to lash the city on Monday.

Starting as a sudden burst, the rains in most parts of the city and suburbs were heavy and took the denizens by surprise. The intensity of the rains was such that, within a span of few hours, several regions of Hyderabad recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall. Traffic came to a standstill at several places and waterlogged streets made commuting hard for long hours.

The rains were severely heavy in areas in and around Gajularamaram of Medchal-Malkajgiri district, which received 151.5 mm of rainfall by Monday night 8 pm, according to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) real-time rainfall data.

Areas in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills under Shaikpet mandal received 124.5 mm of rainfall and Yousufguda region under Khairatabad mandal witnessed 117 mm of rainfall. The areas in and around Srinagar Colony under Khairatabad mandal recorded 106.3 mm followed by Rajiv Gruhakalpa region in Kukatpally, which received 102 mm of rainfall.

Other localities that received significant amount of rainfall include Basthi Dawakhana in Kukatpally (100 mm), CESS, Khairatabad (99.3 mm), Maitrivanam (Ameerpet) (92.8 mm), Ganaanka Bhavan area in Khairatabad (89.5 mm), GHMC office in Kukatpally (85.8 mm), ESS, Balanagar received 83.8 mm of rainfall.

Several regions reported incidents of trees getting uprooted that caused disruptions. Additionally, traffic jams were reported on several flyovers, including the Telugu Talli Flyover at Secretariat, Khairatabad, Punjagutta, Begumpet, Paradise Circle, and other locations.
