Hyderabad: The strengthening and repair works of Hussain Sagar surplus nala starting from Hussain Sagar (opposite Marriott Hotel) and joining Musi River are underway. This project is being executed at an estimated cost of Rs 68.40 crore under the State government’s Strategic Nala Development Plan (SNDP).

As part of the exercise, a 9.12 km long retaining wall from Hussain Sagar (near Ashok Nagar) to Musi (near Golnaka) is being built on either side to reduce urban flooding. Hundreds of residents living in the low-lying areas of Ashok Nagar, Kavadiguda, Gandhi Nagar, Himayath Nagar, Chikkadpally, Baghlingampally, Domalguda and Golnaka will be breathing a sigh of relief once the nala works are completed. Several houses in these localities used to get inundated with every downpour since decades. The work is expected to solve this problem.

Meanwhile, Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi, who inspected the Hussain Sagar surplus nala on Monday, instructed officials to pace up land acquisition works and finish the construction of the retaining wall on a war footing.

“Initially, 710 properties had to be acquired to build the retaining wall. We have brought down the number to 400 by making changes with the help of engineers. The properties that need to be acquired include houses and commercial establishments too,” officials said.

“In addition to resolving urban flooding, sanitation will also improve in colonies in the vicinity of the water channel. The nalas without a proper retaining wall are also a threat to commuters and locals,” an official said.
