Hyderabad: Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) across Hyderabad and Cyberabad have drawn up a blueprint featuring seven water-conservation measures to tackle the ongoing water shortage.

In view of rising demand for water, declining groundwater levels and uncertain rainfall, the RWAs have launched ‘Every drop Counts,’ an initiative promoting the collective priority of responsible water use across every residential community.

UFERWAS president E Ramana, who also heads the Tellapur Neighborhood Association (TeNA), outlined the measures that RWAs should follow to address water-related problems.

“Every RWA should adopt a ‘water conservation action plan’ that begins with measuring consumption,” he told ‘Telangana Today’.

The measures suggested include regular inspections of pipelines, storage tanks, float valves and plumbing systems, immediate leak repairs, and prevention of overflowing sumps and overhead tanks. The communities should safely reuse adequately treated wastewater for gardening, toilet flushing and other suitable non-potable purposes, and residents should clean rooftop filters and recharge pits before the monsoon and properly maintain rainwater-harvesting systems to capture rainfall and support groundwater recharge.

The other recommendations include restricting excessive lawn watering and use of potable water to wash driveways and parking areas, regulating non-essential consumption, including vehicle washing, decorative water features, taking shorter showers, running washing machines with full loads and avoiding leaving taps running.
