Hyderabad: Amid an active monsoon season, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has commenced deep excavation works for a stormwater drain near Maitrivanam in Ameerpet.

The ongoing construction has resulted in severe traffic jams during peak hours in Ameerpet, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

The GHMC recently completed similar stormwater drainage projects at Lakdikapul, which had disrupted the daily commute of hundreds of passengers for three months. Following the completion of the Lakdikapul project, the corporation initiated comparable works in Ameerpet to enhance the area’s stormwater management infrastructure in Ameerpet and adjoining areas.

The GHMC undertook the major work following Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s visit to Ameerpet to review the waterlogging situation in the area. Simultaneously, Commissioners of GHMC and Hydraa conducted a joint inspection and made efforts to check frequent waterlogging.

The site that GHMC has taken up works is located at the busiest bus stop, where hundreds of commuters wait for buses to head towards KPHB, Miyapur, Nizampet up to Patancheru and up to Jeedimetla, and Gandi Maisamma.

A GHMC official told ‘Telangana Today‘, “The excavation works are essential to upgrade the stormwater drainage system in Ameerpet, which will significantly reduce flooding during heavy rains. We understand the temporary inconvenience caused to commuters and are working to minimise traffic disruptions.”

The proposed stormwater drain works will be completed within two or three weeks, said the official.
